HISBALIT
Glass mosaic shaped by colour, geometry and bespoke design, made in Spain since 1964
Founded in 1964 in Soto de la Marina, Cantabria, Hisbalit is Europe’s oldest manufacturer devoted exclusively to glass mosaic. More than six decades of specialisation have produced an unusually rich command of colour, geometry and the distinctive way glass responds to light.
The collections encompass an extensive spectrum of colours, finishes and formats, including square, rectangular, hexagonal and circular tesserae. Glossy, matte, iridescent and textured surfaces each interpret light differently, supporting compositions that range from quiet tonal fields to intricate patterns and bold graphic designs. Flat pieces, precise corners and joints as narrow as two millimetres give the finished surface greater continuity, allowing the glass to remain visually dominant.
This expressive range is extended through Art Factory Hisbalit, the company’s bespoke design service. Colours, patterns, gradients, illustrations and large-scale compositions can be developed specifically for a project, transforming the mosaic into a tailored architectural surface. With more than 400 possible combinations of colours, textures and finishes, the service offers considerable freedom for swimming pools, spas, hospitality spaces and residential interiors.
Its visual versatility is supported by strong technical performance. Hisbalit mosaic is non-porous, with zero water absorption and high resistance to sunlight, frost, thermal change and chemical agents. The same material can therefore move confidently between pools and wellness areas, façades, floors and interior walls while retaining its colour, texture and dimensional stability.
The company’s proprietary HT-K mounting system connects the tesserae with flexible thermoplastic cords rather than covering the reverse with conventional mesh. This leaves a larger contact area available for adhesive, improves grip and makes the sheets easier to position on wet, exterior or curved surfaces. It is a practical detail, but one that speaks clearly of Hisbalit’s long experience with the material.
Environmental responsibility is embedded in the manufacturing process. The mosaics are produced from 100% recycled glass and natural mineral pigments, using electric kilns and very little water. Through the company’s Zero Waste programme, pieces that do not meet its standards are returned to the production cycle and transformed into new mosaic rather than discarded.
Production remains entirely in Spain and retains a strong artisanal dimension, with each tessera handled and assembled by hand. Now present in more than 70 countries, Hisbalit combines international manufacturing capacity with the concentrated knowledge of a company that has spent more than sixty years working with a single material.
Its strength lies in making glass mosaic both expressive and architecturally dependable. Colour, light and geometry provide the creative freedom, while precision, bespoke production and proven technical performance allow that freedom to be carried into demanding projects.
