41zero41
Ceramics as storytelling, from an independent Italian brand rewriting the language of tile design
41zero41 does not follow the traditional Italian ceramic playbook. Founded in 2013 in Fiorano Modenese, at the heart of Italy’s ceramic district, the company began with the ambition to bring a more experimental, expressive and contemporary language to ceramic surfaces. The name itself comes from the local postcode, 41042, reflecting both a strong connection to the region and a determination to approach its ceramic tradition differently.
Where much of the industry begins with the reproduction of marble, stone or wood, 41zero41 often starts with an idea, a visual reference or a story. Art, architecture, fashion, nature and contemporary culture all enter the creative process. Industrial elements sit alongside more artisanal ones, vibrant colour beside quieter tones, and maximalist decoration within otherwise restrained interiors. The objective is not simply to design another tile, but to give the surface a clear role in the identity of the space.
Decoration is one of the brand’s most recognisable strengths. Geometric compositions, unconventional colour pairings, reliefs, expressive graphics and deliberately irregular surfaces appear throughout the portfolio. Each collection has its own atmosphere rather than being absorbed into one repetitive house style. This gives designers considerable freedom to build interiors around rhythm, contrast and carefully placed visual accents.
Format is treated with equal attention. Alongside larger porcelain surfaces, 41zero41 has developed a particularly convincing language through small tiles, mosaics, slim elements and unconventional modular pieces. These formats allow a wall or floor to be composed rather than simply covered. Repetition, grout, orientation and the relationship between individual pieces become part of the design itself.
Colour is explored beyond the limits of conventional ceramic firing. On selected products, cold-colouring and cold-glazing techniques are applied to porcelain after firing, achieving unusual intensity, definition and depth. The process makes possible graphic effects that would be difficult to obtain through traditional production alone, while the brand provides specific installation and maintenance guidance according to the intended use of each surface.
This willingness to experiment does not separate decoration from technical research. Porcelain, glazed ceramic, relief, mosaic and digitally developed graphics are used according to the idea behind each collection. Certain products remain restrained and architectural, while others deliberately draw attention through scale, colour or pattern. What connects them is a curiosity about what ceramic can communicate beyond its practical function.
41zero41 offers a distinctive alternative within the Italian ceramic landscape. Its strength lies in treating tile as a medium for narrative, colour and composition while remaining closely connected to the manufacturing knowledge of Fiorano Modenese. The collections may be graphic, tactile, playful or restrained, but they share the same conviction: a ceramic surface should contribute to the character of the space, not simply complete it.
